2010 Fashion Trends

2010 saw a return to 1990s fashion in the form of Normcore, Athleisure, and revivals of austerity-era period pieces. Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle even donned fascinators – an eye-catching variation on traditional British hats – which proved a trend this decade.

Clear shoes were once popular among celebrities like Kim Kardashian West and Kylie Jenner, but that trend has since passed. Consider switching your footwear style to leather ankle boots or high-top sneakers.

Fringe

Fringe is an accessory trim often seen on clothing or accessories. It typically consists of strips or cords hanging loosely from an uneven edge, decorated with beads or other objects if desired, which adds drama and flair to an ensemble. Fringe can often add flair or give an outfit an eye-catching finish.

Fringe has been around for centuries and has come and gone in terms of fashion. Although most commonly associated with clothing, fringe can be added to accessories and furniture pieces. Fringe can even be used as part of one’s hairstyle; in North America, it is known as bangs. For individual preferences, it can be cut in various styles, including straight, wavy, or ragged.

In the 1920s, fringe fashion saw its peak. Designers such as Madeline Vionette and Charles Worth created garments featuring fringed trim for wear in flapper dresses popularized by Joan Crawford, Olive Borden, and Claudette Colbert, among many other celebrities who all donned fringed gowns.

Fringe has recently come back in many forms, from jackets and jeans to shoes and purses. Fashion influencer Taylor Hage sports an eye-catching black crew neck sweatshirt featuring fringe details that are both cozy and glamorous, worn with baggy blue denim, black combat boots, and thick heart-shaped hoop earrings from Chanel.

Pink

Pink has always been an elusive color; its significance can range from feminine and frivolous to luxurious and tacky. Pink is enjoying an extended moment of popularity, appearing at museum shows and in fashion, art, and design publications. New York City Museum of FIT’s current exhibit entitled “Pink: The History of a Punk, Pretty, Powerful Color” explores our shifting attitudes toward this hue (and has a companion book); writer Sarah Archer and illustrator Glenn Adamson have created an Instagram account dedicated exclusively to pink; this Instagram account features images highlighting pink being seen throughout furniture design fashion art or furniture designs from furniture/fashion industries that feature this hue in furniture/art productions/design publications.

In the 2010s, pink adopted an unnerving punk aesthetic characterized by its use in cropped Balenciaga hoodies and high-waisted nylon stiletto boot pants by designer brands like Balenciaga. Complemented by cracked nail polish and flower crowns, this trend was known as normcore as a reactionary response against maximalism’s excesses.

Celebrities like Vanessa Hudgens, Hailey Baldwin, and Dua Lipa love to don pink shades these days; its popularity is being propelled further by activist movements like CODEPINK: Women for Peace’s protests against drone strikes and Guantanamo Bay prison as well as India’s pink-clad Gulabi Gang of women empowerment fighters – though Barbie doesn’t represent anything anymore it continues to stand for self-love and reinvention worldwide.

Normcore

K-Hole Trend Forecasting Collective introduced the term Normcore in 2013 to describe a shift from “coolness that relies on differences to one that embraces sameness.” New York Magazine coined the word again this year when running an eye-catching fashion spread that defined it as the style “of those who realize they are one among seven billion.” Think Nike baseball caps, stonewashed boyfriend jeans, and socks worn with sandals as prime examples of this look.

As a style, Normcore is defined by neutral colors, classic silhouettes, and functional pieces that make an impactful statement without being overtly loud. Common examples include button-down shirts, trousers, and dad sneakers – though you might also see this aesthetic with fanny packs and suits. To pull off this aesthetic successfully, it is vital to wear clothes that feel intentionally plain, unlike more overt trends such as handlebar mustaches or pickling techniques that only dedicated followers might recognize.

Think of Normcore as an ironic form of clothing, an attempt to show disapproval for fashion’s flamboyance while still looking fashionable. And it isn’t only 20-something urbanites embracing it: everyone from Tom Holland and Devonte Hynes wearing dusted Carhartt to Devonte Hynes in his wide jeans have become icons of this movement.

Jeffrey Campbell Lita Boots

The Jeffrey Campbell Lita bootie debuted in July 2010 and quickly became a fashion blogger cult favorite. This sky-high suede lace-up platform shoe with its chunky wooden heel promptly found itself on fashion bloggers everywhere; whether worn with leggings, mini skirts, or tights, it was THE shoe of 2010.

Named for Runaways frontwoman Lita Ford, these shoes were immensely popular with celebrities like Jessica Alba and Demi Lovato, but what indeed catalyzed their popularity was style bloggers such as Rumi Neely and Wendy Lam, who began pairing the boots with mini dresses and moto jackets to create an instant trend.

If you can’t reasonably afford a pair of authentic Lita boots, plenty of inexpensive alternatives will give the same look for less money. JC Lita’s range also features glitter versions and styles featuring American flags, cosmic stars, or cat tapestry embellishments.

Make your Lita boots pop by accessorizing with black and silver accessories to give your look some sexy flare. Wear a black-and-white dress together for an eye-catching, modern vintage aesthetic – remember to keep everything else simple so as not to clash.

Statement Necklaces

Statement necklaces are chic pieces of jewelry designed to add a feminine, fashionable, and trendy element to any ensemble. Wear one to make a fashion statement–from casual tops and jeans to formal gowns and tuxedos! There are various statement necklaces, each boasting its look–some oversized while others are more dainty; different colors available, some even adorned with rhinestones or gemstones!

One of the easiest and most stylish ways to wear a statement necklace is with a plain or solid-colored shirt, though you could also pair it with skirts or dresses for an alternative approach. The collared shirt can also be buttoned up and placed beneath its collar for an even cleaner and stylish look.

Remember when wearing a statement necklace that it will draw focus to your neck and face. Therefore, it is best to keep other accessories simple – for example, if wearing earrings, opt for studs as these will not compete with the necklace itself. Finally, selecting one that complements or matches the color of your outfit can help make the statement piece even more noticeable and allow it to shine brightly.

Shearling Moto Jackets

Shearling moto jackets are a stylish alternative to leather biker jackets. While thick and warm, they’re still lightweight enough for you to layer over clothing such as shirts and jeans, while their shearling adds an element of ruggedness that works well with casual clothing.

In 2010, women’s fashion saw an explosion of rocker-chic style. Not necessarily a class but more like an aesthetic, this trend became immensely popular among celebrities and regular folks alike – Jenna Lyons (former J.Crew creative director and soon-to-be Real Housewife) is responsible for popularizing it, which remains popular today. Studded heels like Valentino Rockstuds became especially en vogue. Studded jackets such as shearling moto jackets provided another angle on this trend for those wanting a bit more edge!

Whether faux shearling or genuine shearling, this versatile jacket makes an impressive statement with any style. busty shapes can wear longer shearling jackets with hemlines extending around their thighs or lower and pair them with tailored pants to sashay down the street in a manner. Saint created their Aviator Shearling Jacket specifically as motorcycle and streetwear, using fabric blends that offer world-class burst and abrasion resistance – great news if your biker friends wear long shearling jackets!
