At Pier 6 at Brooklyn Bridge Park, there’s something to please every type of child – water lovers, sand diggers, swing enthusiasts, or slide enthusiasts can all find something to occupy themselves with at this playground. Offering a splash zone with water-firing cannons, cliff-like rocks to climb, and plenty of spots to build and create in a sandy village, plus being close to both water taxi service and The High Line makes it the ideal place for combining kid-friendly activities for an exciting and enriching play date!
Lower Manhattan landmark and playground offers an example of how playground design can foster creative, self-directed play for children. Kids love climbing brick pyramids or crawling through tunnels in this park. Recently renovated with more interconnected structures for older kids. Parents will appreciate its closeness to restrooms, green space for picnicking, and numerous benches that allow for restful enjoyment of all these amenities.
New York City’s oldest adventure playground remains popular even after being rebuilt substantially in 2015. This tiny playground seems hidden despite being close to Tavern on the Green. Additionally, it hosts an annual fundraiser for its playground project with pony rides, face painting, and a petting zoo. And its bench seats provide parents with peace while their children run wild!
After its extensive renovation, this Central Park playground is now accessible to children of all ages and abilities. Older kids can explore Adventure Playground’s network of towers, slides, and tunnels, while Tarr-Coyne Tots Playground (just next door) provides fun play experiences for toddlers and preschoolers. Meanwhile, Imagination Playground blocks – which can be manipulated to make structures on the ground or redirected into wading pools or sandboxes – will keep their imagination running wild!

Though small in scale, its abundance of fun makes it the perfect stop on hot summer days: with a water spray feature for cooling off, bucket or strap swings for swinging, and perfect castle building in the sandbox, plus sibling play possibilities (one kid in toddler area while other plays on more significant equipment or kicks around a soccer ball in the grass!). This unique park, designed to look like an indoor junkyard (but cleaner), is open-ended and free-spirited. Although parents aren’t permitted in, trained “playworkers” provide support as children explore and create. It is an exceptional space featuring beautiful, community-made art and furniture and play structures like giant wooden treehouses, mega net climbers, and tire swings, making this genuinely extraordinary space truly distinct yet carefully curated.
This Brooklyn gem near the Seaglass Carousel was recently redesigned with disabilities in mind. The result is an accessible playground featuring natural-feel equipment compliant with ADA regulations, providing plenty of room to roam freely. Structures inspired by neighborhood mainstays like Staten Island Ferry and Lighthouse structures and spray showers offer kids cooling-off facilities.
This Brooklyn playground provides everything a child could desire – from an exciting netted climbing structure and sandbox village to ten swing sets. 4. Swing Valley
If you want a playground that will keep your kids busy for hours, look no further than Brooklyn Waterfront Adventure. Features water play areas, panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline, and plenty of places for energy-burning fun to refuel after all the physical exertion! Bring along Crocs for added comfort – and your child’s favorite ice cream to add even more joyousness.
This classic playground in SoHo may not boast the latest gear or designs, but it does boast a fantastic slide and gated toddler area perfect for pint-sized visitors. If your children love climbing, this playground may be just right: its gentle inclines support early walkers, while steeper ramps challenge more experienced climbers. However, the castle-like structure stands out most here, with ladders and poles as its centerpiece.
Reopened in 2019 following a thoughtful renovation, this Queens playground was one of the first in NYC designed to serve able-bodied and disabled children equally. Among other amenities, there’s an accessible water wheel area and plaques that display English and braille words for cooling off; famous Tarzan-style swings also remain a hit!
Prospect Park Play Space encourages creativity through play by commemorating Ezra Jack Keats’s literary legacy with a statue depicting his character and stages throughout the park. A two-level jungle gym attracts children with climbing structures, sandboxes, and slides of various lengths, as well as an imaginative water feature that feels right out of a fairy tale!

A recent $34 million overhaul by architect Michael Van Valkenburgh (who also designed Brooklyn Bridge Park), led by Danish design firm MONSTRUM and Graded Hills, helps reduce traffic noise while simultaneously dispersing energy as children climb squiggly doodle-like structures that look more like real mountains than typical playground equipment; toddlers also benefit from having their gated area with climbing equipment tailored explicitly towards them.
Queens playground The Imagination Playground opened for business back in 1984 as a pioneer of its kind and provides children with endless ways to play: blue foam blocks that connect in all sorts of configurations, a water table featuring sprinklers and barrels to cool down, and a sandbox where kids can direct sand towards specific places or build boats in a wading pool – with trained play associates supporting imaginative projects along the way!
