Bank Street Children’s Book Committee was established in 1909 and is widely known for its extensive annotated book lists for readers ages 0-18. Additionally, they publish a Searchable Best Books List, which helps educators, librarians, parents, caregivers, and professionals quickly locate developmentally appropriate, engaging, and multicultural books for young audiences.

The CBC Diversity Initiative promotes an inclusive and representative children’s publishing industry through interactive programming for member publisher staff of CBC member publishers and content on its blog. Furthermore, this initiative sponsors the Outstanding Achievement Awards to honor industry professionals who have impacted diversity in children’s literature.

The CBC Graphic Novel Committee works to expand the visibility and legitimacy of children’s and young adult graphic novels through programs at ComicCon International, New York ComicCon, Emerald City ComicCon, and other events. In June alone, their team will visit libraries in Whitehorse, Edmonton, and Calgary with special performances featuring musical story times with Janaye and Gary the Unicorn as well as meet-and-greets with local authors such as Georgette McLeod (Shetsey (My Grandpa)) and Ted Tucker (Yukon Alphabet Book).

CBC Kids Movies

Over the last several years, CBC Kids has expanded its streaming service CBC Gem to over 200 hours of Canadian content, including comedy and social awareness programming that makes children laugh, think and feel.

CBC says its focus is partnering with producers and creators to tell Canadian stories that engage audiences, such as new series like ENDLINGS (12 x 30; Sinking Ship Entertainment for CBC/Radio-Canada, Hulu, WGBH, NDR, ABC Australia and Universal Kids US), or MOLLY OF DENALI (10 x two-minute episodes; Atomic Cartoons for CBC Kids, WGBH and PBS) which showcase Indigenous storytelling perspectives and highlights Indigenous storytelling techniques.

Hodge Podge Lodge was an early morning block of children’s programming aired by CBC that launched in 1987, featuring animated interstitials such as Mamma Yamma, Drumheller, Saumon de Champlain, and Captain Claw as well as colorful geometric shapes moving to music, the award-winning program eventually changed to “CBC Kids.” By 1998, a new lineup was added featuring Canadian and foreign series, live telecasts of Olympic events, and a live game show, CBC Sportsline – expanding airtime by an additional hour.
