Peaceful Mind
Peaceful Mind is a non-profit mindfulness meditation program founded on the belief that outer peace begins within. Their programs target adults, high school students, and children and offer workshops and classes. Their founder, Barb Schmidt, has traveled to over 100 retreats worldwide and studied under teachers from every continent – in addition to authoring several best-selling books internationally.
This study involved up to 12 weekly in-home sessions and eight brief telephone calls involving self-monitoring anxiety levels and deep breathing techniques, skill training, coaching by collaterals, and comparing outcomes of Peaceful Mind intervention against those of untreated controls (UC). Results provided evidence for its feasibility, utility, and positive effects on patients suffering from anxiety in dementia.
This pilot study’s primary limitation lies with its UC control condition, which failed to measure nonspecific effects on patient outcomes. Future trials should incorporate clinic and community providers as collaterals to better reflect real-world care settings; larger samples will enable testing potential moderating and mediating variables; until such time, mindfulness-based treatments such as those employed herein should be seen as complementary strategies against anxiety in dementia.
