Once a user chooses the powerwash option, they are instructed to restart their Chromebook and follow the on-screen prompts for setting it up as new. If managed by a school or business domain manager, its domain enrollment will reenroll when it reboots after powerwash.

Hard resetting a Chromebook is straightforward and can be completed in three steps. First, users must log in as their administrator account before pressing the Esc+Refresh Key+Power Button simultaneously and waiting several seconds until their Chromebook reboots and displays its login screen.

If your device doesn’t restart as intended, it may have overheated. Allow it to cool before trying again; if that fails, contact the manufacturer or powerwash (factory reset) if possible. This is the only way to resolve the issue without jeopardizing its warranty or other protections.

Restart your Chromebook

Reset your Chromebook

Chromebooks are known for being relatively low-cost and user-friendly devices, yet sometimes software issues cannot be solved through troubleshooting steps alone. When this occurs, resetting your Chromebook may be necessary to restore it to its factory state – the Powerwash feature in Chrome OS makes this easy to do and preserves apps and personal data when doing so.

Powerwash can help reset your Chromebook for specific issues or give it a fresh start quickly and painlessly. At the same time, its use should only be considered after trying to identify and resolve them yourself. Before beginning the reset procedure, save any personal files or apps onto an external drive such as Google Drive in advance.

To reset a Chromebook, first sign out and press the refresh key, typically found on the third top-row key from the left of your keyboard. A prompt will then appear asking you to reboot; select the blue Restart button to begin Powerwash. When your system reboots again, you’ll be asked to log back in using your Google account.

Once signed in, a new window will appear with an option to “Powerwash” your Chromebook – ChromeOS’ term for performing a factory reset – either through its Taskbar menu or the Settings interface. When clicking this Powerwash option, a confirmation dialog will pop up, prompting you to confirm before beginning this process.

Local files and data not saved to Google Drive will be permanently deleted when you reset your Chromebook, including files in your Downloads folder. Before beginning the Powerwash process, back up any necessary files, which could lead to permanent loss during resetting your device.
